The Yolanda Housing Project is part of SM Foundation Inc. and SM Cares’ recovery and rehabilitation program for the victims of the typhoon. After the onset of the calamity, SM Foundation immediately activated its Operation Tulong Express which deployed teams in affected areas to conduct relief and medical missions. Last December, SM committed to building typhoon-resilient houses for 1,000 affected families. SM started building the SM Cares Village in Brgy. Polambato, Bogo, Cebu last December 23, which will benefit 200 families who lost their homes from the typhoon.

“A house is projected to cost roughly P200,000. It will be disaster-resilient so the buildings are safe and sustainable,” SM City Davao assistant mall manager Engr. Nick Santos shares.

The houses are designed with concrete ceilings and proper ventilation and composed of 5,000 psi pre-cast walls to accelerate the conventional building method. It is expected to withstand a typhoon with a maximum wind velocity of 250kph without major damages. There will also be a community center with a playground and a basketball court.

Apart from Bogo City, the program will be extended to Ormoc, Palo and Tacloban in Leyte; and Concepcion in Iloilo.

Registration to the SM to SM Run will start on May 16 at the Yolanda booths located at the ground floor of SM City Davao and the upper ground level of SM Lanang Premier.
