What Should I Include in my Summer Wardrobe?

The sun is out, the birds are singing, everywhere suddenly seems to have been dipped in golden paint. Wherever you look, people are out enjoying the sun and feeling very happy that summer seems to have finally arrived. Before long, you too will be clearing out the garden, preparing for the sunshine. Barbecues, trips to the beach, the world is you oyster when it’s warm.

So what will you be including in your summer wardrobe this year? One firm favourite in mine is a sturdy pair of flip flops. Whether you are walking to town or jetting off to some exotic location, ensuring you have a good pair of shoes for walking in, which also won’t let your feet get too hot, is a must. Investing in a nice pair of sunglasses is another essential on my to-do list. The right pair can flatter your face and work well with any outfit. Even if the sun isn’t out, a pair of sunglasses gently sweeping your hair off your face looks perfect.

We’re off to a few festivals this summer, too. Although I am very excited at the prospect of seeing several of my favourite artists altogether on one day, the thought has crossed my mind that the weather may not remain quite as idyllic as it is at the moment. If this is the case, then I want to be fully prepared. It’s time to pull out… the summer back-up plan.

There literally is nothing worse than being caught out in inclement weather. The happiest and most buzzing of garden parties, picnics or concerts can be marred forever in your memory when the rain comes a-pouring. Forget about wet cucumber sandwiches, it’s your hair and make up which go to pot on these occasions.

I’ll always remember the time we were invited to a wedding reception in the gardens of a fancy estate. When we arrived the weather was beautiful and it was the perfect setting for a fairytale summer’s eve. Next thing you know, before you could say ‘Pimms-a-clock!’ the heavens had opened and everyone was running for shelter in the nearest gazebo. Whilst the wedding planner had attended to every detail of the wedding with militant detail, right down to coordinating the flower girls’ bows with the groomsmen’s shoes, she seemed to have forgotten one salient point. There was quite literally nowhere to take cover from the rain, with the exception of sitting in the car. Cue 150 sodden guests and a less-than-radiant bride.

I think it was on this occasion that I decided I needed to up my ante on the clothes front. Now, my car boot is permanently armed with two essential pieces of clothing combat gear. The first of these is my trusty Wellington boots, well-worn and well-loved but still perfect protection for my expertly painted toes. Then there is of course my Barbour jacket, better worn and better loved still.

You just can’t beat a Barbour jacket when it comes to the English weather. Crafted from traditional waxed cotton, each jacket is completely waterproof so you will not get a drop of rain on you. At the same time, the jackets are lightweight enough to let your skin ‘breathe’ whilst you wear them. This makes them perfect for the warmer weather, as you won’t have to worry about getting too hot. Coming in a wide range of styles and lengths, there is a Barbour jacket to suit any outfit or occasion, even posh dos such as weddings.

So if you’re debating what purchases you need to buy this summer, make sure you invest in a Barbour jacket.
