Pasko Fiesta + Taking A Christmas Walk in Davao

1/08/2013

The Philippines is known to be as one of the countries with the longest Christmas season. Here in our country, Christmas carols can already be heard on air and decorations start to add up to the Christmas ambiance in as early as September and probably last until January. In fact, Christmas is one of the most celebrated occasion here in the Philippines, considering that this archipelago is dominantly Catholic.

The City Hall of Davao is adorned with Christmas lights to celebrate the season.
Unlike other cities in the Philippines, Davao City is considered to be one of the safest in terms of celebrating this joyous event. It has been years since firecrackers have been banned and hospitals have zero casualty of firecracker-related injuries- one great thing which I am very proud of. Instead, the city is filled with lights and decorations and to further enhance the mood of the celebration, the city has its Pasko Fiesta sa Davao. This is a month-long celebration consisting of parades, events and contests in honor of the birth of Jesus Christ.

It wasn't my first time to hear about this event after several years of having it as a tradition. However, it was my first time to actively enjoy what Pasko Fiesta has to offer when the Davao Bloggers organized a Christmas photowalk to appreciate the sights and sounds of Christmas as celebrated according to Davao's way. Let me show you some of the photos I took during the photowalk.

Filipinos are also known to be very creative and resourceful in terms of making beautiful lanterns for the Christmas celebration. Pasko Fiesta also gives its citizens the opportunity to express their creativeness and ingenuity through a lantern contest. The lanterns were displayed in People's Park for public viewing. Here are some of my favorites:

A Christmas lantern showing the eagle - a symbolic creature for the city.

This Christmas tree was a major attraction in People's Park. This was actually made up of soda bottles painted with color and Christmas lights.

The bottom of the tree also shows bottles filled with colored water which made it looked like a rainbow.

Davao Bloggers sans me (because I was the one who took the photo!)
I truly enjoyed having this photowalk because it made me appreciate more the beauty of my city. Also, it was an opportunity to bond with my fellow Davao Bloggers. After the long and tiring walk around the metro, this photowalk was capped off with a hearty meal at Hudyakaan plus the desserts at Aling Foping's and ice cold beer at Matina Town Square. I'm glad I didn't miss this event!

How about you? What did you do during Christmas?
